Blind Spot

No matter which art form one engages with, the first realization is that viewing a work of art can alter the viewer’s established perspective—a perspective shaped by successive layers of their education. This occurs because the image often contains points that disrupt this viewpoint—acting almost like fissures—thereby allowing for a different kind of reading of reality. Turning to the writings of psychologist Julian Jaynes, we encounter the term “blind spot”—the area where the optic nerve connects to the retina and where there are no photoreceptor cells capable of transmitting information. It is a void, yet simultaneously a secret landscape. The brain fills this gap using information from the area surrounding the blind spot. Jaynes believed that, just as the illusion of visual continuity persists despite a gap in our visual fields, the mind maintains the illusion of continuous consciousness despite imperceptible lapses in the experience of time. When we take into account the various subjective and objective factors present at the moment of capture, the image—beyond its inherent fluidity and ambiguity—is constantly renewed, appearing unique to the eyes of each viewer. The works in this exhibition explore the boundaries of visual experience. The title serves as both a metaphor and a departure from logical continuity, as physical and psychological factors come into play—creating a journey between what we see and what eludes us. The photographers featured here worked intensively for eight months to produce the material presented in these projects, hoping to prompt viewers to question how we see, what we see, and what might be escaping our notice.
