The Land That Is Not

The usual readings of the image emphasize its structural elements, aiming to give meaning to a world that the viewer already has in his “luggage”. The apparent indeterminacy, on the other hand, forces the viewer to find a support, so as to compile the individual elements, in order to understand the nature but also the certainty of the world that the creator describes. There is a difference in the processes of transmutation and symbolic processing in the work of a photographer. Visual data and unconscious impulses, create aspects that are not precisely recognizable, as often happens in dreams, originating from other references that do not become conscious and concern the ego. Thus, a body of images is created, a grid that places and activates the visual elements free from limits and restrictions. When the photographer returns and delimits the data, the elements are correlated, grouped, coordinated, and also hierarchized in sets that constitute meanings and structure conceptual grids. The Land That Is Not is a work by 10 photographers, which in an indirect but quite coherent way, outlines the outskirts of an everyday life that is questioned. It is a rejection of limitations, a constant allegory, the dregs that remain in our gaze. Curated by: Vasilis Gerontakos
